back to Heinz Homepage            Year 2000 Trip To The Village of Cygaty   Page 1
We visited the in-laws of Ira Ida's brother. They live in the village of Cygaty 2 hours east of Almaty. Cygaty means "abundant water and grass". Falia (see the 3rd photo) is the link to this group. Falia's sister is married to Ira Ida's brother.
THEY MARRIED BROTHERS, NOW THEY ARE WIDOWS
Grandmother #1(age 70, left side); Grandmother #2(age 71, right side). Ira Ida doesn't know their names because in the village people are addressed by their position in the family. These women married brothers and are now widows. They are the mother (#1) and the mother in-law (#2) of Falia. Since Falia lives in her mother in-law's house she is a "kellen". Because she is the youngest kellen, she cooks all the food and serves everyone else. The grandmothers explained that they had both done it for years and now it was their turn to be waited on.

DINNER IS SERVED!
Left side of table: (1st) Daylet (Falia's husband); (2nd) Lucy; (3rd)Rosa (teacher in Ira Ida's Office); (4th) Noah; (5th) Kevin; (6th) at the head of the table is the brother of grandmother #2.

Right side of table: (1st) brother of grandmother #1; (2nd) Daylet's sister's husband; (3rd) Daylet's sister; (4th) grandmother #2; (5) grandmother #1.
