Almaty undergoing a construction boom that started in 2005.  Much of it was high-rise residential/office space that was being built for the international market.  Although many "private" construction firms went bankrupt when the financial crisis hit in 2008, many of the government sponsored new buildings for the financial district are still being built.  Almaty is developing into the financial/banking center for all of Central Asia.  Besides the buildings 35 overpasses are being built at the major intersections around the city.

New and planned buildings in Astana the capital city of Kazakhstan

The city of Astana has been called the president's sandbox because of all of the ambitious nation-identity-boosting building projects that he is personally backing.  The unique buildings are meant to give the Kazakh capital world-wide recognition.
